Auslogics Boost Speed: Tweak Manager

If you're not satisfied with the scope of personalization options offered by Microsoft's native Settings app and Control Panel, you need a tool like Auslogics BoostSpeed's Tweak Manager to expand your capabilities.

Despite Windows 10’s radical UX improvements, it’s hard to suppress the urge to customize your PC to look and behave the way you want it to.

While we’re not taking anything away from the operating system’s locked-in features, we understand the feeling of being in control. And need we mention the excitement attached to fiddling with customizations?

What Kinds of Customizations Does Tweak Manager Offer?

A lot. You’ll hardly find any limitations as to what you can do. The tool is designed to help you tailor your OS to suit your mood and tastes. You can tweak system settings and change things in other areas that you come across every day.

You can apply mouse tweaks, keyboard tweaks, Taskbar tweaks, and even startup and shutdown tweaks. But that’s not all. Tweak Manager also gives you the ability to change how you use some applications. You get to apply Internet Explorer tweaks and Microsoft Office tweaks to use these apps more comfortably. Want to change the look of Skype? The Skype tweaks in Tweak Manager offer wide-ranging customization options that help make chatting and calls in the instant messaging app more fun.

While the goal is to customize, you can take things to your advantage and use the tool to enhance your PC`s performance. For example, there are user interface tweaks that you can apply to decrease wait times and make apps and other system components work faster. Delays occur in various areas of your computer, and certain graphics features are responsible. To make things even easier, you can use the app’s Optimize option (more on this later) to automatically apply system enhancement tweaks.

Tweak system settings the way you like.

So, whether you want to rearrange things to suit accessibility, manage space, refine aesthetics, enhance ease of use, or boost performance, it’s all up to you. Tweak Manager merely affords you the powerful platform to do so.

Firing Up Tweak Manager

Accessing the tool is easy: head to the All Tools tab on Auslogics BoostSpeed’s home screen and locate Tweak Manager under System Tools. Once you open Tweak Manager, you’ll be welcomed by the Auslogics Tweak Manager dialog that asks whether you want to remain in the Beginner mode, which is the default mode, or whether you want to switch to the more advanced area that is the Expert mode. The dialog comes with a message that reads:

“Program is running in Beginner mode. Would you like to switch to Expert mode and get access to an extended list of options?”

As you would expect, the Beginner mode comprises basic tweaks that you can apply on the fly, while the Expert mode comes with more settings that are reserved for advanced users. So, if you don’t have advanced Windows skills, approach the latter with caution.

That said, you shouldn’t get all panicky if you somehow click on the Yes button and find yourself in the Expert mode. Your decision as to which mode to start with does not seal your fate. You can always switch between the Beginner and Expert modes, using the Program Settings page in the Options & Settings environment.

Navigating Tweak Manager

As we mentioned, Tweak Manager is easy to use, just like the rest of BoostSpeed. The tool spells out all the changes you’re going to make, with suggestions and indicators that brief you on every intended tweak.

To the left, you’ll see categories of available tweaks. Each category has subcategories that break down the areas you can touch. By default, you’ll only see the main categories. Click on the arrow to the left of each to expand it and reveal its entries. For example, if you want to apply Windows Explorer tweaks, click on the arrow beside Windows Explorer, and then choose an area to customize.

Once you select a subcategory, the main window (to the right) will provide details of the configurations you want to make, with buttons and tools to help you apply your tweaks.

The right pane of the window is the main tweaking hub. It will first give you a brief description of what you’re about to do, then present the customization options. The bottom of the window is made up of a text box that provides suggestions on what to apply and why you should apply it.

Under the text box, you’ll find indicators that provide brief information about the tweak you’re about to apply.

The first indicator (from the left) tells you whether you need to restart your PC to effect the changes in the category you’re configuring. You’ll see the “Not required” indication beside the icon if the changes in the area can take effect without a reboot.

Right next to the reboot indicator is the icon that advises you on the level of impact that comes with a tweak, whether it’s Lite, Moderate, or Power. The lite and moderate impacts are not overbearing, but you want to be careful to apply tweaks that your computer can handle.

Whether you’re in the Beginner or Expert mode, you’ll see an indicator (to the right of the impact indicator) that describes which mode the tweak you’re about to apply falls under. Remember that you can always change the mode you’re in so that you can have access to advanced tweaks or hide them.

The last indicator (on the far right) shows how much risk the tweak you’re about to apply will put your computer under. You’ll see either a Basic or Advanced indication.

You’ll have to tick and untick checkboxes next to tweaks and select specific radio buttons outlined in the main window. Once you finish selecting your preferences, go to the bottom of the window and click on the Apply button.

It’s easy to apply multiple tweaks and deploy them at once in Tweak Manager. However, we recommend that you take things gradual and apply tweaks in small batches or one at a time. Going about it this way will help you troubleshoot issues that may come up easier. You can note the tweak you last applied before experiencing the issue and then head over to Auslogics BoostSpeed’s Rescue Center to undo the changes.

To the left of the Apply button, you’ll find the Restore Defaults and Optimize buttons.

The Optimize button is active in only some categories. It allows BoostSpeed to choose and apply the best tweaks for improved system performance.

The Restore Defaults button allows you to revert to the category’s default settings.

Takeaway

There’s no doubt that your computer will become more comfortable to use when you know that you’re not stuck with limited personalization settings. You can always change any settings you apply, fine-tuning your system till you get the perfect setup. And to keep your system protected, you can try Auslogics BoostSpeed’s System Security tab, which will help ensure that your personal data is safe.

With this program you can maintain your PC at top speed with just a click of a button once a week."
