The best way to go about it is dual-booting. That way, you&rsquo;ll enjoy the best of both worlds, as you can switch between Windows and Linux. I&rsquo;ll give you the complete run-down on  how to dual-boot Windows 11 and Linux . The process also works for Windows 10, and we&rsquo;ll also cover the pros and cons of using both operating systems on one computer. <\/p>\n<h2>What Is a Dual-Boot?<\/h2>\n<p>\nA dual-boot is a system configuration that allows you to run two operating systems on one computer. It lets you choose which OS to boot and use whenever you turn on your device. This way, you&rsquo;ll have the flexibility of switching between these operating systems without purchasing a different device.\n<\/p>\n<h2>Dual-Boot Windows 11 and Linux: Checklist<\/h2>\n<p>\nI&rsquo;ll focus on dual-booting Linux on a computer already running Windows 11. But as I mentioned, you can use the same process to dual-boot Windows 10 and Linux.<\/p>\n<p>You&rsquo;ll need to get some things done before you start. These include backing up your data, preparing the Linux installation media (requires an 8 GB or larger USB drive),  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/how-to-partition-a-hard-drive\/\">partitioning your hard drive <\/a>, and turning off secure boot.\n<\/p>\n<h3>Backing up your data<\/h3>\n<p>While the process is quite straightforward and safe,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/how-to-back-up-windows\/\">backing up your data <\/a> is recommended to account for the unexpected. It&rsquo;ll be wise to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/windows-10-backup-guide-backing-up-to-an-external-hard-drive\/\">move your important files to an external drive <\/a> or use cloud storage. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><b>Also read: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/how-to-back-up-and-restore-the-windows-10-registry\/\">How to Back Up and Restore the Windows 10 Registry <\/a><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Turning off Secure Boot<\/h3>\n<p>\nSecure Boot is a BIOS-level setting and one of the stringent requirements for installing Windows 11. It is designed to boost security so unrecognized software doesn&rsquo;t load at the kernel level. However, the same feature prevents Linux from booting. So you have to turn it off.<\/p>\n<p>Follow these steps to disable Secure Boot through your  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/best-bios-settings-for-better-performance-and-gaming\/\">BIOS <\/a>:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Launch the Start menu and click the power icon. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Press and hold your keyboard&rsquo;s shift button and select  <i>Restart  <\/i>in the power menu. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Select  <i>Troubleshoot  <\/i>when the  <i>Choose an option <\/i> interface appears. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Click <i>Advanced options<\/i> and select <i>UEFI Firmware Settings<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"screenshots\">\r\n  <div class=\"screenshots__image-shadow\">\r\n    <img data-src=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/UEFI-Firmware-Settings-collage-2.png\" alt=\"Click Advanced options and select UEFI Firmware Settings\" class=\"lazyload screenshots__image\">\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  <div class=\"screenshots__description\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Your system will now reboot to your BIOS environment. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">You can now go to the  <i>Boot Options <\/i> section to turn off  <i>Secure Boot <\/i>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"notebox\">\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox__text\">OEMs use different BIOS interfaces. However, Secure Boot should be fairly easy to locate, and you can look for a similar tab to find the setting. <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<h3>Partitioning your hard drive<\/h3>\n<p>\nYou cannot install Linux on Windows 11&rsquo;s hard drive. If you have two separate physical drives, you can move on and install Linux on your secondary storage device. If you have just one, you must create a new partition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"notebox\">\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox__text\">A hard drive partition is a virtual volume that makes your computer recognize your single drive as multiple storage devices.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>You can create the new partition while setting up Linux (and I&rsquo;ll show you how to). However, splitting your hard drive before installation will make things less complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Follow these steps to create the partition:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Tap <code>Win + X<\/code> to open the Power User menu. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Select <i>Disk Management<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"screenshots\">\r\n  <div class=\"screenshots__image-shadow\">\r\n    <img data-src=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Right-click-start-and-select-disk-management.png\" alt=\"Right-click start and select Disk Management\" class=\"lazyload screenshots__image\">\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  <div class=\"screenshots__description\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Once the window opens, right-click your  <i>C: <\/i> partition and select  <i>Shrink Volume <\/i>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"screenshots\">\r\n  <div class=\"screenshots__image-shadow\">\r\n    <img data-src=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Disk-management-click-Shrink-volume.png\" alt=\"Disk management click Shrink volume\" class=\"lazyload screenshots__image\">\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  <div class=\"screenshots__description\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Type the amount of space (in megabytes) you want to allocate to your new partition and select  <i>Shrink <\/i>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"notebox\">\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox__heading\">Important!<\/div>\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox__text\">Ensure you leave ample space for your Linux distro. While 12 GB is okay, I recommend allocating at least 30 GB. Depending on what you want to do, you may have  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/clean-my-pc\/\">to allocate more space <\/a>. <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n<div class=\"screenshots\">\r\n  <div class=\"screenshots__image-shadow\">\r\n    <img data-src=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Shrink-partition.png\" alt=\"Disk Management Shrink partition\" class=\"lazyload screenshots__image\">\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  <div class=\"screenshots__description\"><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The new space will be listed as unallocated, and the size will be deducted from your main hard drive. Close the Disk Management window. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Creating the installation media<\/h3>\n<p>\nIt&rsquo;s time to create your Linux installation media. Ensure your USB flash drive has at least 8 GB of space and does not contain important files, as the process will wipe the drive.<\/p>\n<p>The first step involves downloading the Linux distro you want to install. As mentioned, there are many to choose from. In my case, I&rsquo;m going for the popular option:  <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu.com\/download\/desktop\">Ubuntu <\/a>. The latest version is free to download and just a few gigabytes large. <\/p>\n<p>The next download is  <a href=\"https:\/\/rufus.ie\/en\/\">Rufus <\/a>. While there are other tools, Rufus is widely trusted and easy to use.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Now, follow these steps:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Connect your USB flash drive to your computer and run Rufus. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Make sure the drive is selected under  <i>Device <\/i>. Rufus should detect and select it by default. Installing today&rsquo;s Ubuntu isjust as easy as  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/how-to-install-windows-11-in-2021\/\">installing Windows 11 <\/a>, if not simpler. You can check your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, and other hardware to ensure everything works. Your Linux distro&rsquo;s boot manager is the best way to select which operating system to boot into.&nbsp; While recent Ubuntu installations will configure your PC to boot into the GNU GRUB menu, you may have to apply some manual tweaks. Choosing the Ubuntu (or the Linux distro) boot manager involves the same principles as  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/how-to-change-boot-order-in-bios-in-windows-10-11\/\">changing your boot order in BIOS <\/a>. Follow these steps: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Go to your BIOS environment. In this case, tap your BIOS key once you start your computer. It might be Esc, F1, F10, or F12, depending on your OEM.
