With that said, there are actually quite a few reasons why you may want to have the Run box disabled on your PC.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The Run box provides quick access to powerful system tools and settings\u2014and this can be misused. For instance, commands like <em>\u201cregedit\u201d<\/em> (Registry Editor) and <em>\u201cmsconfig\u201d <\/em>(System Configuration) can change important system configurations. So, if there are multiple people using your PC, <b>you may want to disable the Run box to prevent unauthorized use of powerful PC commands.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">With the Run box, users get to execute programs by simply typing their names or paths. <b>Disabling the Run box is an efficient way to block other PC users from running unauthorized or unapproved applications.<\/b> For instance, parents may do this when managing computers used by children. Ironically, two of the inbuilt Windows features commonly accessed through the Run command\u2014the Group Policy Editor and the Registry Editor\u2014can be used to stop the Run dialog from working. This tutorial will show you how to use them to disable the feature.<\/p>\n<h3>Method one: Disable the Run command box with the Group Policy Editor<\/h3>\n<p>You can use the Group Policy Editor applet to disable the Run command if your PC is running Windows 10\/11 Enterprise or Windows 10\/11 Professional. Computers running the Home edition of the operating system cannot use this option. So if you are running the Home edition of Windows, skip to the second method right away.<\/p>\n<p>Follow the procedure here to block the Run command in Windows 10\/11 through the Group Policy Editor.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Hold down the <code>Windows key + R<\/code> on your keyboard to open the Run dialog.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Type <em>\u201cgpedit.msc\u201d<\/em> \u00a0without the quotation marks into the Run field. You have disabled the Run dialog in Windows 10\/11. You can test this by pressing the <code>Windows key + R<\/code> combination.<\/p>\n<p>You will see that nothing happens. If you try launching the Run menu through the Start menu, it won\u2019t open either.<\/p>\n<h3>Method two: Disable the Run command box with the Registry Editor<\/h3>\n<div class=\"notebox\">\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox__text\">This method is recommended for systems running the Home edition of Windows with no access to the Group Policy Editor. However, it will also work for everyone running Windows 10\/11. <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>You can use the Registry Editor to easily \u201cturn off\u201d the Run command on Windows 10\/11.<\/p>\n<div class=\"notebox\">\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox__heading\">Proceed carefully when editing the registry<\/div>\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox__text\">It contains all the configurations, settings, and options that both the operating system and installed application require to function properly.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, unduly changing registry keys or mistakenly modifying a critical entry can cause the system to crash or become unstable. <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n<p>We recommend initiating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auslogics.com\/en\/articles\/how-to-back-up-and-restore-the-windows-10-registry\/\">registry backup <\/a> before doing anything through the Registry Editor. Select a location and click the <em>Save<\/em> button. But it\u2019 s a free country, and you may just as easily change your mind and decide to enable it back again.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019 ll be using the same methods to enable the Run command box on Windows 10\/11 as we did when disabling it.<\/p>\n<h3>Method one: Enable the Run box command with the Group Policy Editor<\/h3>\n<div class=\"notebox_lite\">\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox_lite__heading\">Note<\/div>\r\n\t<div class=\"notebox__text\">Quick reminder: the Group Policy Editor is only available for Professional, Enterprise, and Education edition users of Windows 10\/11.
