Windows 10’s dedicated browser, Microsoft Edge, is a very helpful tool for navigating the World Wide Web. The browser comes with an intuitive and easy-to-use interface, but there are still some things that you might want to change. For instance, Microsoft Edge’s search box always has a placeholder text saying: “Search or enter web address”. Some users may find this distracting and would prefer that the address bar appeared blank.

If this is the case for you and you are wondering how to remove the Edge search box placeholder text, keep on reading.

How to disable input text suggestions in Edge?

Removing the search box placeholder text in Edge is quite simple and can be done in just a few simple steps:

  • Go to Start.
  • In the search box, type “regedit”.
  • In the list of results, click Registry Editor to open the program.
  • Now, navigate to the following address:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppContainer\Storage\microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge\ServiceUI

  • You will need to create the following REG_DWORD values:

HideAddressBoxPlaceholderTextOnStartPage

HideAddressBoxPlaceholderTextOnNewTabPage

  • Once you have created the above REG_DWORD values, set the value data for each one to “1”.
  • You can now close the Registry Editor.
  • Go back to the Microsoft Edge web browser.

You can now see that the search box placeholder is gone and there is a blank space in the address box instead

Finally, we recommend you have a reliable anti-virus program onboard. A tool like Auslogics Anti-Malware will automatically scan your system for malicious items and remove them before they’ve caused damage to your PC.
