Dark Mode is a relatively new Windows feature that was added to the system as part of the October 2018 release. When the feature was launched, you had to update to the latest version of Windows 10 to use it — plus, Dark Mode also became available for Microsoft Office applications and the Edge browser.

Now (since the integration of Dark Mode into Office 2019) you can also use Dark Mode when working with your desktop Outlook app. Previously, you could only enable Dark Mode in the Outlook UWP app and Outlook Web app. But now, even those users working with Office 2019 and Office 365 can benefit from the dark theme feature.

From this article, find out how to read Outlook desktop app messages in built-in Dark Mode.

What does Windows Dark Mode do?

In short, Dark Mode increases the contrast in your UI by adding a shadow effect to all of its components. You will notice that icons and text on your screen have become lighter and your windows have turned black. This setup would work best for those who prefer interfaces that are less bright as well as those who want to put less strain on their eyes when working a lot in front of a computer screen.

How to read Outlook messages in Dark Mode?

In order to read your mail in Dark Mode, you simply need to:

  • Go to Outlook Settings at the top of the page.
  • Find Dark Mode and toggle it on.
  • Click OK to confirm and close Settings.

In fact, you may have already seen the pop-up message informing you of this option in Outlook. It says: “In Black Theme you can now read your messages with a dark background”.

If you are not yet sure whether you like Dark Mode or not, you have the option of switching between the two modes using the Sun and Moon button that will allow you to change from dark to light or from light to dark when needed, just like in the Outlook app.

To make sure that all new features and updates run smoothly on your PC, we suggest you have a reliable anti-malware program like Auslogics Anti-Malware installed on your computer. The software can run alongside your main anti-virus with no compatibility issues and will run regular checks of your system, getting rid of all malicious items.
