Those who have a Windows phone are probably well familiar with the Windows Action Center. What this tool does is store key updates and security and maintenance alerts in one convenient location. This is a very nice feature to have on board — but recently some users have reported having problems with the Action Center after having upgraded their system to the “October 2018 Update”, version 1809. The issue was that the Action Center seemed not to store any notifications while showing that it did. How to get rid of false notifications in the Windows 10 Action Center? Find out in this article.

How to remove false notifications from the Windows 10 Action Center?

The way the Action Center in Windows is supposed to work is this: if you have pending notifications that you’ve missed, you will see a toast icon with horizontal lines in it — as you hover over it, it will tell you how many notifications you have; if you don’t have any notifications, there will be no lines in the icon.

The problem some users are reporting is that their Action Center icon has lines in it all the time and, when hovered over, displays a message saying, “1 new notification”. However, as you click on the icon, no new notifications are there.

There are several things you can try to fix the issue.

Option one: fix the Action Center notification issue via PowerShell

  • Go to Start, type “powershell” and press Enter.
  • In the PowerShell window, paste the following command:

Get-AppxPackage | % { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppxManifest.xml” -verbose }

  • Restart your PC and check if the problem has resolved itself.

If the Action Center notifications are still not working, move on to the next solution.

Option two: fix the Action Center notification issue via Background Applications settings

  • Go to Settings.
  • Navigate to Privacy > Background Applications.
  • Here, uncheck Run applications in the background.
  • Restart your computer.
  • After your PC has restarted, go to Settings again and re-activate the Run applications in the background option.

Your Action Centre notifications should now be working properly.

Finally, in order to make sure your system is working properly and to avoid a variety of glitches and errors, we recommend you download and install Auslogics Anti-Malware, an anti-virus program that will scan your PC and timely detect any malicious items lurking in the background. The program is compatible with Windows 10 and can run alongside your main antivirus.
