While your Windows 10 PC might have all it takes to demonstrate smooth operation and run super-fast, it may nevertheless fail to do so. No doubt a slow Win 10 machine is proficient at triggering stress and worry, but make sure not to let negative feelings take over. Fortunately, the problem is quite easy to resolve since in most scenarios, the list of possible culprits can be easily narrowed down. So, take a deep breath and keep reading. In this short yet informative guide, we’ll explain every procedure needed to see your system skyrocket.

Fix 1. Update Your OS

If your Windows 10 has a shameful record of sluggishness, chances are it is running slow because it lacks important updates. Some of Microsoft’s critical updates might have gone astray while working their way to your computer. To get them in place, update your system manually:

  1. Press the Windows logo + I shortcut on your keyboard.
  2. Navigate to the Update & Security tile and click on it to proceed.
  3. In the right pane, locate and click the Check for Updates button.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to round things up.

This is it. In many scenarios, updating Windows 10 is enough to make things right.

Fix 2. Defrag Your Hard Drive

Have you ever heard of defragmentation? If not, we’ll let you in on this magic. Over time, the fragments of your data literally get scattered all over the hard drive, which makes it almost impossible for your OS to access them quickly. This gets you an irritating case of a slow, sloth-like computer. Luckily, there is a process called defragmentation that is used to restore all those scattered fragments into whole files or bigger fragments. This allows your system to quickly locate and use them when the need arises. It’s that simple.

To defrag your hard drive, do the following:

  1. Type defrag into Search.
  2. Once you see Defragment and Optimize Drives, click this option.
  3. Locate your HDD. If its level of fragmentation is more than 10 per cent, click Optimize.

The built-in Windows 10 defrag tool will do its best to defragment your HDD. Wait until the process is over and enjoy a faster device.

At this juncture, you can make a different choice and opt for Auslogics Disk Defrag. This tool will defrag your HDD and optimize your SSD if need be and thus ensure fast data access. Options such as offline defragmentation, automatic defrags, drive cleanups, and SSD optimization are available in the Pro version.

Fix 3. Disable Startup Programs

Yet your PC is most likely packed with useful programs, the truth is not all of them are justified in launching automatically at startup. Seriously, you can start anything you like whenever you like, so why overload your system with unnecessary processes and contribute to its sluggishness? Here is how you can quickly disable startup programs:

  1. Fire up Task Manager (use the Ctrl+Alt+Delete combo and click Task Manager).

The rule of thumb is to have as few processes launching at startup and running in the background as possible. This way, you can have a noticeably faster Windows 10 PC. If it’s still not as fast as you think it should be, there is an option to go the extra mile and tweak your startup and other system settings with a PC optimizer like Auslogics BoostSpeed.

Fix 4. Clean Up Your PC

A slow PC is often a cluttered PC. If it is clogged up with myriads of files and folders, the poor device literally stands no chance of pleasing you with excellent performance. Storing all your media on your drive is not a wise strategy, and neither is installing software on your computer “just in case”. Make sure only important programs and services are part of the system. Remove unnecessary software and migrate media files to an external storage device or to a cloud solution of your choice. A major clean-up is sure to boost your PC performance no matter how hopeless your device seems at the moment. You can automate the process with Auslogics BoostSpeed to save effort and time.

Fix 5. Run an Anti-Malware Scan

All to no avail? Well, you making this far and still having a slow computer may mean your device is malware-infected. While this might seem quite sinister, there is no need to worry: luckily, when it comes to fending off malicious entities, you have a plethora of options to choose from. There are a lot of powerful third-party anti-virus solutions on the market, and it is up to you to choose one that happens to suit your needs best. That said, if that is to your liking, you are free to scan your system with the built-in Windows Security suite. Here is how:

  1. Hit the Windows logo + I shortcut.
  2. Click on the Update & Security tile.
  3. Make a beeline for Windows Security.
  4. Click on Open Windows Security.
  5. From the left-pane menu, select Virus & threat protection.
  6. Under Quick scan, click Scan options.
  7. Select Full scan and click Scan now.

Wait until the scan completes. The process might take a while, so it is essential that you be patient. Hopefully, Windows Security will prove its worth and purge your PC of malware.

Since you can’t be too careful when it comes to protecting your OS, you may wish to consider extra options to beef up your security. In this vein, Auslogics Anti-Malware might come in handy: this software will not conflict with your main antivirus, if there is one, and will provide you with a wide array of options for protecting your sensitive data and removing all types of malware from your PC.

That’s all for now. If the performance of your computer is not up to par, make sure to give the methods above a try. You will not regret it, seriously.
