Antivirus 2011- What to do when Auslogics Antivirus cannot detect a virus or spyware?
'False negatives', meaning that the program fails to detect a file that is malicious, occur very rarely. This usually happens when the malware uses an unknown technique to hide itself from the antivirus software. This doesn't happen often and when it does, Antivirus is promptly updated to detect and remove this new type of malware.

- What are Windows services?
A Windows service is a long-running program that performs specific functions and which is designed not to require user intervention. Usually, Windows services start when the Microsoft Windows operating system is booted and run in the background as long as Windows is running.
Once a service is installed, it can be managed by launching Services from the Windows Control Panel => Administrative Tools or typing Services.msc in the Run command on Start menu. Note that disabling services is dangerous and can reduce the functionality of your computer.
Auslogics BoostSpeed 5 includes a simplified service manager to help you disable the services that your computer does not need and leave the important services running.
- What does service performance mean?
Each service uses computer resources - memory, CPU, or hard disk(s). We have tried to estimate how resource-heavy is each service and created Perfomace Impact reference to help you establish which services are the most resource-heavy and whether you need them for your everyday computer activities or not.

- I’m trying to register the program but I’m getting a message that the license key was probably purchased for a previous version. What to do?
You can’t use a license key for one of the previous versions (BoostSpeed 3 or 4) to register BoostSpeed 5.
If you have a license key for BoostSpeed 3 or 4, you can upgrade to BoostSpeed 5 at a discounted price (more information here).
- I’ve downloaded BoostSpeed 5 Special Edition and got a free license key. Then I’ve updated the program and it prompted me to register again, but my license key stopped working. What to do?
Most likely, you’ve installed the full paid version of BoostSpeed, which can’t be registered with a license key for BoostSpeed SE. You can uninstall BoostSpeed Pro and re-install BoostSpeed SE, but if you like BoostSpeed SE, we recommend buying a BoostSpeed Pro license – the full version is even better than the Special Edition one.
- My program is registered, but I got a message that the license key is illegal. Then the program went back to the trial mode. Why did that happen and what to do?
Most likely, your license key was blocked automatically because the limit of activations had been exceeded. Please contact our
technical support team. Don’t forget to include the e-mail address you used to order the program and, if possible, the order number.
- When trying to register the program, I’m getting a message that most likely the license key was purchased for one of the previous versions of BoostSpeed. What to do?

Disk Defrag Free- What's the difference between simple defragmentation and 'Defrag & Optimize' mode?
Unlike simple defragmentation, 'Defrag & Optimize' mode applies several optimization techniques:
- Free space consolidation
- System files smart placement*
- Moving regular files from the MFT Reserved Zone to the rest of the disk space
*This feature is disabled by default. You can enable it under the Algorithms tab in the program settings.
- Can I defragment large disks of several terabytes?
Yes. Disk Defrag is supplied with a powerful engine that allows defragmenting multi-terabyte drives.
- What is MFT?
Probably the most important of the key system (metadata) files that define an NTFS volume,
the Master File Table or MFT is the place where information about every file and directory on
an NTFS volume is stored. The MFT is in essence a relational database table, containing
various attributes about different files. It acts as the 'starting point' and central management
feature of an NTFS volume--sort of a 'table of contents' for the volume, if you will. It is
somewhat analog to the file allocation table in a FAT partition, but is much more than just
a list of used and available clusters.
Currently we are working on the MFT defragmentation support, so that your MFT can also be
defragmented by the program. This feature will be available in one of the future major
versions of the program.
- Can it defragment RAID?
Auslogics Disk Defrag works well for RAID disks too.
The RAID controller still presents the RAID disks as an NTFS storage to the file system and
therefore Auslogics Disk Defrag will not do anything differently for RAID arrays.
- Which temporary files will Disk Defrag remove?
When the option is enabled, Disk Defrag removes temporary files in the following locations before defragmenting:
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp (or C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp), and
C:\Windows\Temp. This can significantly improve the defragmentation speed.
- Why are some of the files skipped by the program?
Sometimes Disk Defrag skips certain files because they are locked by another running program. Common solution would
be to exit all running applications when you defragment your disk.
Some files (MFT, etc.) are skipped because they are system files and cannot be defragmented by this program.
Disk Defrag also needs a contiguous disk space for each file to be defragmented. If your disk has a lot of free space, but it is broken into small
free space intervals, Disk Defrag is unable to defragment some of the large files (such as movies, etc.). To tackle this problem, you can run 'Defrag & Optimize' mode.
It will consolidate free space into a contiguous block and defragment even the largest files on your disks.
Disk Defrag can defragment hard drives with as little as 1% of free space available. However, better results can be achieved if there is at least 10% of free space on the disk.
- What is Free space not found error?
Disk Defrag needs a contiguous disk space for each file to be defragmented. If your disk has a lot of free space,
but it is broken into small free space intervals, Disk Defrag is unable to defragment some of the large files (such as movies, etc.). To tackle this

Disk Defrag can defragment hard drives with as little as 1% of free space available. However, better results can be achieved if there is at least 10% of free space on the disk.
- Does it support command line? Can I schedule Disk Defrag?
Yes, Disk Defrag supports command line and has a scheduler.
The command line tool is called 'cdefrag.exe' and can be found in the program folder once you download and install the program.
Home users may find that they are more comfortable with the feature-rich built-in scheduler. Run the program, then click on View in the program menu and select Scheduled Defragmentation.
- Can Disk Defrag run on Vista and Windows 7? Can it run on a 64-bit computer?
Yes, it can. Auslogics Disk Defrag supports the following Windows versions:
- Windows XP with SP2 or later (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
It does not support Windows 2000, 95, 98, 98SE or Windows ME.
- What languages is Disk Defrag available in?
Currently Disk Defrag is available in English, German, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Serbian and Turkish.
- Is it really FREE?! What's the catch?
Disk Defrag is absolutely free of charge for home users.
Corporate users can learn about licenses available on the Disk Defrag business page.
- Are there volume license pricing discounts for corporate users?
Yes, you can learn about pricing discounts on the Disk Defrag
business page.

If the program has not updated the status within 7 days, please contact our technical support.
- Can I defragment large disks of several terabytes?
Yes. Disk Defrag Pro is supplied with a powerful engine that allows defragmenting multi-terabyte drives.

- Can the program defragment RAID?
Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro works well for RAID disks.
The RAID controller still presents the RAID disks as an NTFS storage to the file system and
therefore Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro will not do anything differently for RAID arrays.
- Which temporary files will Disk Defrag Pro remove?
When the option is enabled, Disk Defrag Pro removes temporary files in the following locations before defragmenting:
C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Temp (or C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Temp), and
C:\Windows\Temp. This can significantly improve the defragmentation speed.
- Why are some of the files skipped by the program?
This can happen for several reasons:
- When you have other applications running while defragmentation is underway, some files may be used by those applications and locked because of that. A solution to this problem is to close all other applications and restart defragmentation.
- Some system files may be in use by the system and locked because of this. A solution to this problem is scheduling offline defragmentation, which will run at boot time and defragment files that are locked during normal system operation.
- The program may be unable to defragment large files and skip them due to there not being enough contiguous free space to put the whole file. Although your disk may have plenty of free space, it may be fragmented into sections that are not large enough for some bigger files. A solution to this problem is to run free space consolidation and repeat defragmentation after that.
- What is "Free space not found" error?
When viewing operation results, you may see a Free Space Not Found error. It does not mean that your disk is out of free space, it usually means that the program was unable to find contiguous sections of free space to place some defragmented files. The most common cause of such errors is free space fragmentation. The best solution is to run free space consolidation and then repeat defragmentation.
- Why are my disks still fragmented after running defragmentation?
When you first start using the program, especially if you haven't defragmented your drives in a long time, you may notice that your disks are still fragmented after running standard defragmentation. This most commonly happens with the system disk, and the most common cause of this problem is presence of a lot of fragmented system files that are locked during normal system operation. The best solution for this problem is to schedule offline defragmentation for the next boot, which will defragment system files and should significantly reduce disk fragmentation.
- Can Disk Defrag Pro run on Vista and Windows 7? Can it run on a 64-bit computer?
Yes, it can. Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro supports the following Windows versions:
- Windows XP with SP2 or later (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
It does not support Windows 2000, 95, 98, 98SE or Windows ME.
Duplicate File Finder- What is MD5?
MD5 is an algorithm which allows to find files with identical content by comparing their checksums. MD5 checksum of a file is as unique as a fingerprint of a specific individual. That is why there is a very small possibility of getting two identical checksums of two different files.
- Can Auslogics Duplicate File Finder check files on removable drives?
Yes, Auslogics Duplicate File Finder supports removable devices like USB flash drive.
- What operating systems Auslogics Duplicate File Finder can be run on? Does it work with a 64-bit CPU?
Auslogics Duplicate File Finder supports the following Windows versions:
- Windows XP with SP2 or later (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
It does not support Windows 95, 98, 98SE, 2000 or Windows ME.
There are no Mac or Linux versions.
- Is it really free?
Yes, Auslogics Duplicate File Finder is absolutely free and contains no spyware or adware! If you like this program, you can help us by telling other people about it.
- Does DFF support network drives?
No. This function has been disabled for security reasons.
- iTunes finds a lot of duplicate songs, but DFF doesn’t detect them. Why?
There are two most likely reasons:
- The songs are not true duplicates. iTunes detects songs as duplicates if they have the same name and the same artist name. It doesn’t consider the difference in length, different tags, etc.
- You have the “Ignore File Names” and “Ignore File Dates” options disabled. Enable these options and scan again.
- Why does one need the “Ignore File Names” and “Ignore File Dates” options?
By default Duplicate File Finder has very strict search criteria: the files have to have the same name, the same creation/modification date, and they have to be identical on the binary level. The “Ignore File Names” and “Ignore File Dates” options make the search criteria less strict: the first option allows DFF to ignore file names and the second option allows DFF to ignore file creation/modification dates. If you enable both options, Duplicate File Finder will only perform checksum and byte-by-byte comparison, i.e. match files by content.
- I think that I have a lot of duplicate files, but DFF isn’t detecting them. Why?
Most likely you have “Ignore File Names” and “Ignore File Dates” disabled. Enable these options and scan again.
File Recovery- I have accidentally erased a photo on my digital camera. Can I restore it with Auslogics File Recovery?
Digital camera memory sticks and computer folders are quite similar. With this program, you will be able to recover any recently deleted picture or movie from your digital camera. Flash memory and other USB devices are supported as well.
- Can I recover data from a CD or a DVD?
No, Auslogics File Recovery is designed for recovering files from hard drives, floppy drives, USB Flash drives and memory sticks.
- I have deleted a hard drive partition. Can I get the data back?
Yes, Auslogics File Recovery can locate the information about deleted portions of the disk, so that you can restore files from lost partitions. Moreover, even if you have reallocated some portions of the disk for other partitions, you can still recover your data.
To restore files from a lost partition, click Tools and then Scan for Lost Partitions. This opens the Search Lost Partitions wizard. The wizard will ask you to specify which physical disks to scan for lost partitions and the range to perform the scan on.
When you have found the deleted partition you are looking for, you will be able to restore files from it.
- Can I recover data from a formatted disk?
If only a quick format of the disk has been performed, you will be able to recover all the files that were on the disk before formatting. However, it will be impossible to recover any files from a drive that has been fully formatted, since that process erases all information from the disk.
- Some files were restored incorrectly. Why?
Auslogics File Recovery works by trying to restore the original file contents. The moment a file is deleted, its data on the disk is not physically erased, but rather marked as free. Chances are that newly created files can partially overwrite the space occupied by the deleted file. In this case, it's not possible to restore the file completely. And, although the file might look like it was restored, the contents of the file can differ from that of the original.
Usually the best chance to restore the files is when the files are not on disk C: and when they are restored as soon as possible.
- Does Auslogics File Recovery support Windows Vista or Windows 7? Does it work with 64-bit CPU?
Auslogics File Recovery supports the following Windows versions:
- Windows XP with SP2 or later (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
It does not support Windows 2000, 95, 98, 98SE or Windows ME.
- How can I create a disk image?
To create a disk image, please follow the steps:
- From the Disk Drives list in the left column of the main window select the partition or drive that you wish to create an image of.
- Click Tools and then Create Disk Image.
- Specify where you wish the program to save the image file. Please make sure that you don't save the image to the same disk that you are creating an image of.
- To open the image later, just go to Tools and select Open Disk Image. You will be able to work with the image file as you would with the disk drive.
Registry Cleaner- Does Auslogics Registry Cleaner support Windows Vista? Does it work with a 64-bit CPU?
Auslogics Registry Cleaner works with the following Windows versions:
- Windows XP with SP2 or later (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
It does not support Windows 95, 98, 98SE, 2000 or Windows ME.
- Is Auslogics Registry Cleaner safe to use?
Yes, it is. Unlike some other registry cleaners, Auslogics Registry Cleaner doesn’t try to find as many problems as possible. It only scans safe registry categories by default. Novice users should use default settings. However, advanced users can select additional categories to scan for problems with higher risk level.
Note. If you are not sure which categories to scan, simply right-click on the registry categories list (left column of the program's starting page) and select "Check Safe Only" from the drop-down menu.
- Why does Auslogics Registry Cleaner find fewer errors than some other similar programs?
The answer is simple – safety reasons. We don’t want our registry cleaner to first impress you with the number of errors found and then make your system unstable, or even worse – unbootable. By default, Auslogics Registry Cleaner will scan only safe registry categories.
However, advanced users can select additional categories to scan for problems with higher risk level.
- Is it really free?
Yes, it is. No hidden costs, no viruses, no spyware.
- My computer is still slow. How can I make it faster?
Cleaning the Registry is vital, but sometimes not enough. There are also disks that need cleaning and defragmenting, settings to be optimized, unneeded Windows services that can be disabled, various tweaks to be applied.
Download Auslogics BoostSpeed to maximize the speed of your PC.
- Registry Cleaner can’t fix some registry errors. Why?
Most likely, the keys are blocked by your antivirus or one of the running programs. It’s best to add these keys to the Ignore list.
- My computer stopped working properly after cleaning the registry. How to roll back the changes?
You can undo all changes with the help of Rescue Center (go to File -> Rescue Center). Once Rescue Center is open, select a backup and click on the Restore button.
Please help us to improve the program by contacting our technical support team and letting them know what exactly stopped working properly.
Registry Defrag- Why does Registry Defrag need to start when my computer starts?
Registry Defrag needs to compact the registry which is only possible during reboot, when no other programs are running and using the registry. This is why Registry Defrag schedules itself to be started
on the next reboot. Please note that it schedules itself to run only once. It will display a defragmentation report and will not run the next time you restart your PC.
- Is compacting the Registry safe?
Registry Defrag works in such a way, that it takes all potential problems into account. All program operating stages are thoroughly checked, and the program will stop if there are any problems. Registry Defrag 5.0 and onwards use a new defragmentation mechanism that works on computer reboot. This algorithm is much more stable and eliminates the possibility of any problems occurring while defragmenting the Registry.
- Why are the figures shown by the program in the course of analyzing the Registry different from those shown after defragmentation?
It's normal. During the analyzing stage a valuation algorithm is used. It is optimized for fast work and small CPU use, so the figures you get are approximate. During defragmentation the full version of this algorithm is used, which thoroughly defragments the Registry.
- I launched the program after the first defragmentation and it prompted me to defragment again. Why?
The system actively works with the Registry on boot-up deleting or adding data. That's why on rare occasions the program tells you to run defragmentation again. You can either do it or defragment later when the Registry is much more fragmented. This will not affect system speed in any way, because 99% of Registry data is already defragmented.
- Does Auslogics Registry Defrag support Windows Vista? Does it work with a 64-bit CPU?
Auslogics Registry Defrag works with the following Windows versions:
- Windows XP with SP2 or later (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit)
- Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
It does not support Windows 95, 98, 98SE, 2000 or Windows ME.
- Registry Defrag can’t defragment the registry and displays error 22. What to do?
Most likely, you are getting this error because Registry Defrag is conflicting with your anti-virus. Some anti-viruses (we know about BitDefender and Auslogics Antivirus) block all attempts to rewrite registry entries, which doesn’t let Registry Defrag do its job. If that’s the case, then the only solution is to uninstall your antivirus.
